Winter is the season of stress. Your heating system runs at full capacity. Your pipes carry water through freezing temperatures. Your roof bears the weight of snow and ice. Everything that is marginal — a gap in insulation, a pipe that runs too close to an exterior wall, a roof vent that is not quite sealed — becomes a problem in winter.
The maintenance focus is protective. You are not improving; you are holding the line. Replace filters more frequently. Monitor the attic for frost. Keep an eye on pipes during cold snaps. Test detectors, because heating systems introduce combustion risks. If something is going to fail, winter is when it will fail.
Spring: Assessment and Repair
Spring is the most important season for maintenance, because it is the season of disclosure. The snow melts and reveals what winter did. The ground thaws and settles. The first warm days let you open windows and inspect what was sealed shut for months.
This is when you walk the perimeter of your home and look for damage. Are the gutters still attached? Did any shingles lift? Are there new cracks in the foundation? Is the caulking around windows still intact? Spring is not the time to start new projects — it is the time to fix what winter broke.
Spring does not ask you to build. It asks you to look — carefully, methodically, at everything winter touched.
Summer: Strain and Upkeep
Summer is the season of maximum load. Your air conditioning runs constantly. Your plumbing works harder with more household activity. The sun itself degrades exterior finishes, and the heat accelerates the aging of rubber hoses, plastic fittings, and sealants.
Summer maintenance is about efficiency and prevention. Clean condenser coils so your AC does not work harder than it needs to. Check appliance hoses before the heat makes them brittle. Clean the dryer vent before the heat and lint combine into a fire hazard. Summer is also the ideal time for exterior work — painting, sealing, refinishing — because materials cure best in warm, dry conditions.
