The Consistency Principle
In exercise, as in most things, consistency produces results that intensity cannot. A person who exercises moderately — thirty minutes, three times a week — for five years will be dramatically fitter, healthier, and stronger than a person who exercises intensely for two months and then stops. This is not because moderate exercise is inherently superior. It is because the moderate exerciser is still exercising in year five, while the intense exerciser burned out in month three. The variable that determines long-term fitness is not how hard you train. It is how long you keep training. A sustainable routine optimizes for the latter.
The workout you do consistently is infinitely better than the workout you do perfectly but abandon.
Start Below Your Capacity
The most common mistake in starting an exercise routine is beginning at a level that is too high. A person who has not exercised in years starts with an hour-long, high-intensity workout. They are sore, exhausted, and demoralized. They do not return. The sustainable approach is to start below your current capacity — to begin with a level of effort that feels almost too easy. This serves two purposes. First, it allows the body to adapt gradually, reducing the risk of injury and excessive soreness. Second, it builds the habit before building the intensity. Once the habit is established — once exercise is a normal part of the week — intensity can be added. But the habit must come first.
Find What You Enjoy
No exercise routine is sustainable if it is miserable. The body adapts to many forms of movement — walking, swimming, cycling, dancing, weightlifting, yoga, climbing, team sports. The best exercise for you is not the one that is theoretically optimal. It is the one you will do consistently, which means the one you enjoy, or at least do not dislike. If you hate running, do not run. Walk, swim, cycle, dance. The exercise that you look forward to — or at least do not dread — is the one that becomes a habit. Enjoyment is not a luxury in fitness. It is a structural requirement for sustainability.
